All 3 were beautiful goddesses with enough vanity to want Paris to pick her. They had tried to get Zeus to pick, but he refused. One goddess was his wife, another was his daughter, and the third was the goddess of beauty. It was too hard for the king of the gods. The mortal Paris didn't have such conflicts. All he had to do was decide which dazzlingly beautiful goddess offered him the best reward. Athena would make him a great hero or military leader and Athena would give him a rich and powerful kingdom. However, Paris picked Aphrodite, not only because as a beauty goddess she probably deserved the honor, but also because he preferred her bribe. She offered him the most beautiful woman in the world, Helen, wife of King Menelaus of Sparta. So Aphrodite, the winner of the Judgment of Paris, received the golden apple of Eris/Discord that was produced when the gods failed to invite Eris to the wedding of the nymph Thetis and the mortal king Peleus, parents of Achilles.
