Cognomen Part of Roman Names

From

Definition: The cognomen (pl. cognomina) was an extra Roman name, like a nickname. Rufus, a cognomen, means the owner of the cognomen had red hair. Although originally a personal name, the cognomina were handed down to indicate a subdivision of a larger family grouping. Some Roman men, like Gaius Marius, had no cognomen.
