During the siege of Rome by the Gauls under Brennus, the Romans at the Capitol wanted to perform their religious obligations, so Kaeso Fabius as pontifex went out among the enemy, performed his religious rituals and returned to the Capitol without harm. It is thought the Gauls marveled at his bravery both in leaving the place of safety still left to the Romans and then returning to it when he could have used the excursion as an opportunity to escape. Cassius Dio VII.25 tells the story.
