Definition: During the siege of Rome by the Gauls under Brennus, the Romans at the Capitol wanted to perform their religious obligations, so Kaeso Fabius, as pontifex, went out among the enemy, performed his religious rituals and returned to the Capitol without harm. It is thought the Gauls didn't touch him because they marveled at his bravery both in leaving the one place of safety still remaining to the Romans at Rome, and then returning to the place of safety on the Capitol when he could have used the excursion as an opportunity to escape.
Cassius Dio VII.25 tells his story.
