Named for the family of the emperors who built it, the Flavian Amphitheater became known as the Colosseum possibly because of its proximity to a colossal statue of Nero.

The Flavian Amphitheater or Colosseum was an enormous structure, about 160 feet high and covering about 6 acres. It had a removable awning to provide some shade for spectators.
