Fresco

By N.S. Gill, About.com

Definition: A fresco is a wall painting on wet plaster. The freshness of the plaster explains why these wall paintings are called frescoes. Pliny and Vitruvius discussed the technique of wall painting. Campania, which was covered by volcanic ash when Mt. Vesuvius erupted on August 24, A.D. 79, is the source of most of the Roman frescoes.
