Sabines

By , About.com Guide

Definition: The Sabines were an early Italic people who lived northeast of Rome. Livy tells of several wars between the ancient Romans and the Sabines. In 290 the Romans conquered the Sabines and absorbed them, and then in 268, the Sabines received full Roman citizenship.

The Sabines are most famous for the legend of how the early Roman men found themselves wives -- via the rape of the Sabine women.
The Roman historian Sallust was a Sabine.
