AUC - Ab Urbe Condita

By , About.com Guide

Definition: AUC stands for "ab urbe condita" which refers to the founding of Rome. The Romans reckoned their history from its legendary founding in 753 B.C., which was their zero year. Years were calculated from the base of AUC much as people today calculate A.D. or C.E. years from the year zero (or 753 AUC). People also and more commonly used the names of the consuls to designate specific years.

Livy wrote a history of Rome Ab Urbe Condita.

A.U.C. is a featured Thursday's Term to Learn.

Examples:
You might write the year 44 B.C. as 710 AUC and the year A.D. 2011 as 2764 AUC.
