Which Modern Legal Concepts Do We Owe to the Ancient Romans?

By , About.com Guide

Question: Which Modern Legal Concepts Do We Owe to the Ancient Romans?
Answer: We owe a debt of gratitude to the ancient Romans for many of our modern legal concepts. Some of these legal concepts may seem the bread and butter of ambulance-chasing lawyers, but they also provide us with the legal grounds for claiming that we have certain rights.

Romans established legal concepts of civil rights, the legal personality of corporations, contractual obligations, real and personal property, private ownership, modes of proof for use in the courtroom, the legal force of a will.
