Forma Urbis Romae

By N.S. Gill, About.com

Definition: Forma Urbis Romae is a detailed carved marble map of Rome that measured 18.22 m in width and 12.87 m in height. The map was carved between A.D. 203 and 211 and covered a wall of the Templum Pacis in Rome. Only about 10-15 of the Forma Urbis Romae map survives and those are broken into 1,186 fragments. Thanks to digital scanning, Stanford University is making progress piecing them together.

Stanford provides a picture of the pieces of the map.
