Definition: Sallust (Gaius Sallustius Crispus) was a Roman historian who lived from 86-35 B.C. Sallust was from a plebeian Sabine family and became tribune of the plebs in 52. Sallust was expelled from the senate in 50 B.C. He was elected praetor in 47 and became governor of Numidia in 46 and was charged with extortion as governor when he returned to Rome. Although the charge didn't stick, Sallust retired to private life and wrote historical monographs, including Bellum Catilinae and Bellum Iugurthinum.
