[Spain] Hispania

From A Classical Atlas of Ancient Geography by Alexander G. Findlay. 1849.

Hispania is one of the names given the area that is the modern Spain and Portugal. It is also known as the Iberian Peninsula, a name said to come from the Ebro (Iberus) river. Early settlers included Celts and Africans. Phoenicians may have colonized areas of the peninsula in 1100 B.C. Here are more resources on Hispania from the point at which it came to the attention of Republican Rome.

While Hispania was the first province of the Romans outside of the vicinity of Italy, conquest took a long time to complete.

Sertorius Biography
Sertorius was sent as a military tribune to Spain and later became embroiled in the dispute between Marius and Sulla. He supported Marius and returned to Spain as propraetor. He became an important, powerful figure in Hispania and a target to the other faction in Rome.

Roman Provinces By Date and Geography
Spain was one of the first of the areas Rome conquered to use as a province. This article provides more than a list of places. It also takes a look at what we normally mean by a Roman province.

Emperors From Hispania
Not all these emperors should probably be called Spanish. Some may have been of Roman stock, rather than Spaniards, but their families came from Spain. By the Imperial Period, Hispania had a lot to offer a Roman, including the latifundia plantations and the possibility of a thriving export business in grain, olive oil or wine.

Writers From Hispania
Hispania provided some very important writers for Rome, including the philosopher-dramatist Seneca who flourished at the time of Nero, his father and his nephew Lucan.
