This painting of Saint Augustine working in his cell, by Sandro Botticelli (1490-1494) is tempera on panel, measuring 41 × 27 cm, and housed in the Uffizi gallery, in Florence. It may have been made for an Augustinian hermit of Santo Spirito.

Saint Augustine once saw St. Ambrose engaged in what was then a novelty: he was reading silently. Reading was done aloud, and in public. Saint Augustine practiced reading silently and alone until he became adept. Saint Augustine was not a hermit although he is shown wearing such clothing under his bishop's robe.
