Major Figures in the Fifth Book of the Iliad
- Athena - favors the Greeks. Also known by the Romans as Minerva.
- Diomedes - from Argos. One of the most fearless of the Greek leaders. His father was Tydeus.
- Hephaestus - blacksmith god, son of Hera. Known as Vulcan among the Romans and in some translations of the Iliad.
- Ares - war god.
- Sthenelus - a king of Argos, on the Greek side of the Trojan War.
- Aphrodite - the goddess of love and winner of the apple of discord who promised Paris (Alexander) Helen. She supports the Trojans and especially Paris.
- Pandarus - Lycian archer. Persuaded by Athena, he broke the truce between the Greeks and Trojans by shooting an arrow at Menelaus.
- Aeneas - Trojan prince who survives to found Rome.
- Apollo - god of many attributes. Favors the Trojans.
- Iris - messenger goddess.
- Dione - the mother of Aphrodite in some accounts. Also in some accounts a titan goddess.
- Acamas - a leader of the Thracians, killed by Ajax.
- Sarpedon - king of Lycia, son of Zeus.
- Hector - champion of the Trojans and son of Priam.
