Odyssey Study Guide Contents

  • Alcinous - King of Phaeacia and descendant of Poseidon. Alcinous is clearly not as up on the Achaean graces as Nestor or Telemachus.
  • Arete - Queen of Phaeacia, mother of Nausicaa, and wife/niece of Alcinous. Like Alcinous, she is a descendant of Poseidon.
  • Nausicaa - Daughter of Queen Arete and King Alcinous, Nausicaa helped Odysseus when he was stranded and says she wants a husband like him.
  • Odysseus - Wandering Trojan War hero famed for his wiles. He is a favorite of Athena and disliked by Poseidon.
  • Demodocus (Demodokos) - Blind bard who sings at the Phaeacian court.
  • Euryalus (Euryalos) - Strong, athletic young Phaeacian who insults Odysseus thinking his refusal to compete was because Odysseus was not an athlete. He is obliged to make recompense to Odysseus. It is thought that handsome Euryalus is comparable to Ares and clever Odysseus to Hephaestus in the 8th Book of the Odyssey since it is there that the story is told of Hephaestus cleverly capturing Ares in a net with Aphrodite.
  • Phaeacia - (Place.) Also known as Scheria. It may be Corcyra. Odysseus sails a raft and then swims to Phaeacia in Odyssey Book VII.
