Major Figures in the Seventeenth Book of the Odyssey

  • Odysseus - Wandering Trojan War hero famed for his wiles. He is a favorite of Athena and disliked by Poseidon.
  • Telemachus - Son of Odysseus who was left as a baby when Odysseus went off 20 years earlier to fight in the Trojan War.
  • Eumaeus - Faithful swineherd of Odysseus. He was the son of a king, but was kidnapped as a young boy and sold to Laertes, Odysseus father.
  • Penelope - Faithful wife of Odysseus and mother of Telemachus.
  • Antinous - Suitor. Son of Eupthes. Throws a stool at the stranger (Odysseus) and criticized for so doing by the other suitors.
  • Melanthius - Goatherd who feels superior to Eumaeus and makes fun of the stranger (Odysseus) and Eumaeus.
  • Theoclymenus - Stranger Telemachus picked up who happens to be a decent seer.
  • Argos - Favored dog of Odysseus. He has been abused in his absence. He recognizes his old master and dies.
