Major Figures in the Sixteenth Book of the Odyssey

  • Odysseus - Wandering Trojan War hero famed for his wiles. He is a favorite of Athena and disliked by Poseidon.
  • Telemachus - Son of Odysseus who was left as a baby when Odysseus went off 20 years earlier to fight in the Trojan War.
  • Eumaeus - Faithful swineherd of Odysseus. He was the son of a king, but was kidnapped as a young boy and sold to Laertes, Odysseus father.
  • Penelope - Faithful wife of Odysseus and mother of Telemachus.
  • Amphinomus - One of the suitors, leader of the 52 suitors from Dulichion. Son of Nisus. Best liked by Penelope.
  • Antinous - Suitor. Son of Eupthes. Advocates killing Telemachus.
  • Eurymachus - One of the suitors. Telemachus describes Eurymachus as "aglaos" or noble. Eurymachus is the son of skilled Polybus.
