- Odysseus - Wandering Trojan War hero famed for his wiles. He is a favorite of Athena and disliked by Poseidon.
- Menelaus - Husband of Helen for whose sake the Trojan War was fought. He has been a host to Telemachus and his friend Pisistratus.
- Pisistratus - Son of Nestor of Pylos and companion of Telemachus in his travels.
- Telemachus - Son of Odysseus who was left as a baby when Odysseus went off 20 years earlier to fight in the Trojan War.
- Eumaeus - Faithful swineherd of Odysseus. He was the son of a king, but was kidnapped as a young boy and sold to Laertes, Odysseus father.

- Theoclymenus - A seer who asks Telemachus for passage on his boat and for hospitality.
- Eurymachus - One of the suitors to whom Telemachus says Theoclymenus should appeal for hospitality. Telemachus describes Eurymachus as "aglaos" or noble. Eurymachus is the son of skilled Polybus. He looks like the most promising of the suitors.
