From the article: Was Alexander the Great a Greek?
Were Macedonians of the time of Alexander the Great considered Greeks? Even if they weren't in general, would Alexander the Great have qualified as a Greek? Is it possible to settle the argument? State Your Case
hahahah
- The name Macedonia (Greek: Μακεδονία, Makedonía) comes from the ancient Greek word μακεδνός (Makednos). It is commonly explained as having originally meant "a tall one" or "highlander", possibly descriptive of the people.[2][3] The shorter English name variant Macedon developed in Middle English, based on a borrowing from the French form of the name, Macédoine.[4] Alexander III of Macedon (20/21 July 356 – 10/11 June 323 BC), commonly known as Alexander the Great (Greek: Ἀλέξανδρος ὁ Μέγας, Aléxandros ho Mégasiii[›] from the Greek ἀλέξω alexo "to defend, help" + ἀνήρ aner "man") Philip II of Macedon (Greek: Φίλιππος Β' ὁ Μακεδών – φίλος phílos, "friend" + ἵππος híppos, "horse" The volume of the surviving public and private inscriptions indicate that there was no other written language in ancient Macedonia but Greek,[2] and recent epigraphic discoveries suggest that ancient Macedonian was a variety of the Northwestern Greek dialects.[3] cry now!

Is Ancient Macedonian, not Greek.
- As Echevearia said-one fact that proves that. Second - "is unique abilities were further demonstrated by the inability of any of his generals to unite Macedonia and retain the Empire after his death – only Alexander had the ability to do so" (why not Greece? why Macedonia?" -If nowadays Macedonians are 100% Slavs, then the Greeks are not 100% greeks. We all know that there is no pure Ancient Macedonian nor Greek. the people in nowadays Macedonia consider themselves Macedonians ,coz they are independent, not under the Greek government influence." -The Hunza and Kalashian people prove that they are MACEDONIANS, descendants of the Alexander's army. -For the present problem, it is just political, Bulgaria and Greece working together to erase FYROM once and for all, and there will be noone who will call himself Macedonian. I agree with GreekMacedonian,,he is telling the truth. But thanks to Tito, the Macedonians finally got the RIGHT to call themselves Macedonians.

Macedonians in the 20th Century
- This debate will never be resolved. My personal concern is that I've experienced living, speaking, and realizing the truth that my family comes from Greece with Macedonian roots. My grandparents were both born in Edessa, Greece (Voden in Macedonian) which is near the ancient city of Pella where Alexander the Great was born. However, Greeks may be shocked to know that my grandfather, born in 1892, spoke only Macedonian as it was the language of the land. My grandmother, born in 1902, spoke both as Greek was being introduced more there at that time. Greeks who live outside of the midwest and Toronto are astonished when I explain my heritage, but when we visited my elderly aunts and their children in the 60's, they all spoke Macedonian to my mom. Now the language, in Greece, is becoming extinct as the old timers pass away and Greece wouldn't hear of the word "Macedonian". Ironically, that's changed in recent years while denying they anyone actually spoke Macedonian. It's almost like

Doric Tribe = Greek
- The ancient Macedonians were a Doric tribe. Dorians were Greeks. Case closed. There is no trace of doubt within the academics of the world about the Greekness of the Macedonians, unless of course we count historical revisionists connected with the current government of FYROM, which is erecting statues, stadiums and renaming streets to ancient Macedonian names and figures. There is a problem here and it involves people and countries. It is serious.

Alexander of Macedon
- Alexander the Great was half Macedonian half Greek.

- Done of the things you said are right on from current studies and finds but done is still considered speculative theory. my family still speaks tsakonian which is the last surviving dialect of doric which were epirotes. I believe Albanian is ABN add mixture of illyrian and epirotes with the hellenization and romanization with emergence of Albanoi tribes etc. epirotes were doric and the amalgamation of these languages show integration of the highland tribes etc. but we cannot as of yetprove that those all sea people and illyrian Greek etc. these are likely tribes who consolidated and who warred amongst each other. There is also the immersion during Alexanders ringer of paeonian people subjugated under Macedonia. But the argead dynasty proper were epirotes, dorians with kinsmen from the pelloponnese. Sooo yes there was some integration but for modern slavic macedonians to claim sole ancestry is purely absurd. The Balkans has had so much integration thru conquest and migration.

to guest falang...
- the massive problem i see with nationalist slavs is that they literally deny the historical record and are only placed by the state run media of the succesor state of the former socialist republic of macedonia. sadly even though the govt wiped away terms such as socialist and replaced it with democracy, republic and consitution it is literally a surviving legacy of the socialist state you still are. for instance, the macedonian academy of science and arts is a legacy institution from the former govt. this is all you read, from "historians, archaeologists and geneologists" self proclaimed propagandists such as pasko kuzman and aleksander donski. kuzman literally wears 4 watches claiming he travels through time and donski writes books about ufo's, spiritual life after death, the queen of england being macedonian, 11 us presidents being macedonian, etc. both of these men LITERALLY have no formal education from universities but are offical heads of state run heritage revisionism.propagand

Alexander was Hellene
- The country's name is Hellas and the spoken language is Hellenic. That is why we refer to Hellenistic Period and not Greek. Hence, Alexander was Hellene and his father Philippos II unified all Hellas after his victory in the battle of Charenea at 338 B.C.

Alexander was Greek
- Alexander a Slav? Are you serious? If there are readers who truly believe that Alexander was not Greek I grieve for our civilization. How can such ignornace exist? I fear for the future generations who will be taught things that never happened. The nomadic Slavs who settled in Macedonia around 500AD have no glorious ancient histroy and are trying to steal one.

The Language Issue
- Once more the uneducated and ignorant show their true colours. For those of you who say that Alexander did not speak Greek and brought translators with him, have you not been to the Mediterranean? Do you know nothing of local dialects? Do the northern Italian dialects resemble southern Italian dialects? We are talking pre-social media and pre universal education. It was common for Greek dialects to differ to the point where they were difficult to understand by those from other regions of ancient Greece. I wish those who post on this site can do some reading on ancient civilizations before they attempt to express their ignorance. The greatest danger to our civilization is the attempt to rewrite history.

120% Greek
- Evidence after evidence indicate Alexander was Greek. He would turn in his grave to witness slavs have turned him into a slav.

A challenge
- I place the following challenge to you and all of the concorted "Macedonian" ethnicity: If you ever come across an authentic, legitimate relic or find of the ancient Macedonian kingdom with an inscription other than in the Greek language, you shall have achieved the discovery of all times. You need not despair, however. There is no time limit! YOU HAVE UNTIL THE COLLAPSE OF OUR SOLAR SYSTEM!

Greek was not Alexander's native tongue
- Greek was not Alexander's native tongue. [1] Quintus Curtius Rufus "The History of Alexander" "Alexander the Great speaks in front of the Macedones of his army: "The Macedonians are going to judge your case," he said. "Please state whether you will use your native language before them." Philotas: "Besides the Macedonians, there are many present who, I think, will find what I am going to say easier to understand if I use the language you yourself have been using, your purpose, I believe, being only to enable more people to understand you." Then the king said: "Do you see how offensive Philotas find even his native language? He alone feels an aversion to learning it. But let him speak as he pleases - only remember he as contemptuous of our way of life as he is of our language". [p.138]
