Red Figure Pottery: Women Washing Their Clothing

Thursday March 20, 2008
PankratistsOne of the most useful sources for classics is pottery. There were some very talented vase painters in ancient Greece. One of them, known as the Berlin Painter, depicted scenes from athletic competitions. Many of these paintings of panathenaic competitions, which show styles of competition, nude wrestlers, arm wraps, and more, are in black-figure, where the underlying orange-red clay is decorated with figures in black. To show delineations, like those for muscles, the artist simply scraped away the black to reveal a thin line of the underlying red. Black-figure pottery by and large gave way in popularity to Red-figure pottery in the second half of the sixth century B.C. The early red-figure topics include mythological scenes and scenes from daily life. The accompanying photo here shows red-figure women washing clothing, on a pelike (a flat bottomed jar like an amphora) painted by the Pan Painter. Here are sample pictures of works by some of the famous ancient red-figure painters: Red Figure Pottery.
