Thursday's Term to Learn - Triumvirate

By August 13, 2009

Augustus. From The Hundred Greatest Men, 1885.
The term "triumvirate" refers to power shared by 3 men, but in the period before Octavian became emperor, triumvirate was an official term. We call the triumvirate in which Octavian was involved the "second" triumvirate because of an earlier triumvirate that lacked official standing.

The second triumvirate consisted of Octavian (Augustus), Marcus Aemilius Lepidus, and Mark Antony. It was an official body known as Triumviri Rei Publicae Constituendae Consulari Potestate.
