Historian Thomas R. Trautmann and Archaeologist Carla M. Sinopoli write:
"Although thousands of seals and inscribed artifacts have been recovered, the Indus script remains undeciphered. Unlike Egypt or Mesopotamia, this remains a civilization inaccessible to historians...."
Does that mean we know nothing about the history of the Indian subcontinent until the 12th century Muslim invasion? The answer is no, but we are limited. Nearchus and Megasthenes provide us with early (but not as early as the Harappan seals) eyewitness accounts. Read more in Early Sources for Ancient Indian History.
