Proclus Diadochus (8 Feb. 411-17 Apr. 485)

Definition: Proclus, who was born in Constantinople, studied at Plato's Academy under Plutarch and Syrianus (a pupil of Plutarch). After studying, Proclus became a teacher, and at the death of Syrianus, became head of the Academy. He was then called by the title Diadochus, meaning successor. He remained at the head of the Academy until his death. His philosophy was the neoplatonism of Plotinus, Porphyry and Iamblichus. Seven of his hymns have been preserved. His Commentary on it is our major source for Euclid's Geometry.
