And did those feet in ancient time
Walk upon England's mountains green?
And was the holy Lamb of God
On England's pleasant pastures seen?
And did the Countenance Divine
Shine forth upon our clouded hills?
And was Jerusalem builded here
Among these dark Satanic mills?
by William Blake (1757-1827)
Two days ago, Palm Sunday marked the start of Holy Week. Since Holy Week commemorates an execution, it is a sorrowful time. Sermons tend to be serious and critical. The readings focus on Pharisees embarrassed by proclamations of faith and the common man preferring to spare the life of Barabbas the murderer to Jesus -- despite Herod and Pilate pleading his innocence. But Easter itself is a time of miracles and legends, especially about the vessel used to gather the blood of the dying Christ and the re-appearance of Jesus after his death. Two historical figures about whom such legends abound are Joseph of Arimathea and Mary Magdalene.
