Fascination of Mummies
There really are detailed internet instructions for preparing a body for the afterlife -- complete with innards-filled canopic jars. Mummies fascinate us (as if anyone needs to be told after the recent box office success of the Boris Karloff remake: The Mummy Returns). And it's not just mummies, but all of Ancient Egypt. As Nikole L. Didier says:
"The art and architecture of this ancient civilization has mesmerized generation after generation of scholars and lay people with unparalleled continuities of art and architectural forms that lasted, pretty much unchanged, over immense periods of time. No other culture on earth had anything like the staying power of the classical Egyptian expressions."
Wide Range of Egyptian Topics
There must be thousands of internet sites on Ancient Egypt, written by the full range of enthusiasts, amateur to expert Egyptologist. The main topics are pyramids, temples, sphinxes, mummies, death, afterlife, pharaohs, dynasties, language, hieroglyphs, excavations/reconstruction, museums/artwork, religion, and society. My arrangement is different since Ancient Egypt is but one of many topics covered by Ancient/Classical History at About. Here are the major Egyptian topic headings you'll find in the Ancient/Classical History Library. And here are some other pages from the Ancient/Classical History site with Egyptian content: That's a lot and the list is growing. To help you through the maze of information on Ancient Egypt I've written a quiz focusing on the dynasties, pharaohs, and their accomplishments.Spelling Egyptian
It should be noted that the spelling of names varies. That's because, like Arabic and Hebrew, Ancient Egyptian didn't have vowels. The vowels we use are interpretive. Even the consonants vary and, as if that weren't hard enough, sometimes the names are modern, other times they're Ancient Egyptian, and still other times they're the names given by the Greeks and Romans. Don't let this throw you. No one at this end is keeping score.
Docendo discimus. We learn by teaching. I discovered several valuable sites only by trying to create the quizzes. Please read at least some of the suggested pages before you attempt to answer the questions.
