How Did Attila the Hun Die?

By N.S. Gill, About.com

Question: How Did Attila the Hun Die?

There are so many mysteries of ancient history and the cause of the death of Attila is just one of them. There are clues, though. Like other historical mysteries, the clues lead to various solutions, so the short answer to the question, "How did Attila die?" is, "we don't know."

Answer: Traditionally, it has been claimed that Attila the Hun died of a nosebleed on his wedding night. He may have died of something like a hemorrhoid in his esophagus caused by heavy drinking. Reader Tom Utterback says: "Chronic alcoholism leads to acid reflux disease which culminates eventually in esophageal varices rupturing."

Michael Babcock presents the case for the murder of Attila in The Night Attila Died.
