Norse Mythology: Creation of the World
Creation of the Norse world was complicated by the fatc there were nine worlds. On the Upper level lived the Asgard (Æsir, the land of the gods), Alfheim (elves) and Vanaheim (Vanir). On the Middle Level lived the Midgard (men), Jotunheim (giants), Svartalfaheim (dark-elves) and Nithavellir (dwarves). On the Lower Level were Muspelheim and Niflheim.

Odin was accompanied by two ravens who informed Odin of the doings of the gods, giants, dwarves, and men. He lost his eye in exchange for a drink from Yggdrasil, a sacred well full of knowledge. Around the eighth or ninth century he took over Tyr's function as sky god.
