Definition: 'Suffect Consuls' replaced the elected consuls (consules ordinarii) of ancient Rome when they resigned or died. More than one suffect consul could be appointed for the same position for the same consular year.

Examples:
In the first year of the Republic, the ordinary consuls were L. Junius Brutus and L. Tarquinius Collatinus, but they were replaced. P. Valerius Poplicola, Sp. Lucretius Tricipitinus, and M. Horatius Pulvillus served as Suffect Consuls.
