Definition: The limitanei were troops under a dux, usually stationed on the frontier. The Latin word limes in the name refers to a boundary or the fortified frontier at that boundary. The pay of the limitanei was lower than that of the comitatenses.
Palatini were higher status and pay field troops than the comitatenses.
